This course immerses participants in the art and science of the Raku firing process, focusing on hand-building and wheel-throwing ceramic techniques. Designed for beginners and experienced ceramicists, the course emphasizes texturing methods and their applications in creating dynamic surfaces on hand-built and wheel-thrown pieces. Participants will explore innovative approaches to the Raku process, including glazing greenware for direct firing, to streamline project completion and reduce firing costs.
Participants will create unique ceramic pieces, experimenting with Traditional Raku, Horsehair Raku, and Naked Raku techniques. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the interaction between form, texture, and glaze while addressing practical classroom adaptations for grades 1–12. Students will Raku fire at least three pieces—one brought to the class and two created during the workshop—with opportunities to produce additional work for later firing.
This hands-on workshop fosters technical skill development and artistic exploration, equipping participants with the tools to implement the Raku process in their personal practice or educational settings.
